Moscow is Russias capital city and is the largest city in the country. As of January 1, 2010, Moscows population was 10,562,099, which also makes it one of the top ten largest cities in the world. Because of its size, Moscow is one of the most influential cities in Russia and dominates the country in politics, economics, and culture among other things.Moscow is located in Russias Central Federal District along the Moskva River and covers an area of 417.4 square miles (9,771 sq km). The following is a list of ten things to know about Moscow:1) In 1156 the first references to the construction of a wall around a growing city called Moscow began to appear in Russian documents as did descriptions of the city being attacked by the Mongols in the 13th century. Moscow was first made a capital city in 1327 when it was named the capital of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. It later became known as the Grand Duchy of Moscow.2) Throughout much of the rest of its history, Moscow was attacked by rival empires and armies. In the 17th century a large part of the city was damaged during citizen uprisings and in 1771 much of Moscows population died due to the plague. Shortly thereafter in 1812, Moscows citizens (called Muscovites) burned the city during Napoleons invasion.3) After the Russian Revolution in 1917, Moscow became the capital of what would eventually become the Soviet Union in 1918. During World War II, however, a large portion of the city suffered damage from bombin gs. Following WWII, Moscow grew but instability continued in the city during the fall of the Soviet Union. Since then, though, Moscow has become more stable and is a growing economic and political center of Russia. 4) Today, Moscow is a highly organized city located on the banks of the Moskva River. It has 49 bridges crossing the river and a road system that radiates in rings out from the Kremlin in the citys center.5) Moscow has a climate with humid and warm to hot summers and cold winters. The hottest months are June, July, and August while the coldest is January. The average high temperature for July is 74Â °F (23.2Â °C) and the average low for January is 13Â °F (-10.3Â °C).6) The city of Moscow is governed by one mayor but it is also broken down into ten local administrative divisions called okrugs and 123 local districts. The ten okrugs radiate out around the central district which contains the citys historic center, Red Square, and the Kremlin.7) Moscow is considered the center of Russian culture because of the presence of many different museums and theaters in the city. Moscow is home to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the Moscow State Historical Museum. It is also home to Red Sq uare which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.br/>8) Moscow is well-known for its unique architecture which consists of many different historic buildings such as Saint Basils Cathedral with its brightly colored domes. Distinctive modern buildings are also beginning to be constructed throughout the city. 9) Moscow is considered one of the largest economies in Europe and its main industries include chemicals, food, textiles, energy production, software development, and furniture manufacturing. The city is also home to some of the worlds largest companies.10) In 1980, Moscow was the host of the Summer Olympics and thus has a variety of different sports venues that are still used by the many sports teams within the city. The victim, Josie, in the film, faced rape, intimate partner violence, and sexual harassment encounters. Incidentally, one of the major focuses of the film concerned sexual harassment, but I would be remiss if I did not give equal time to the horrendous acts of violence experienced by the victim. The rape experienced was forcible and statutory in nature, and is a recognized social problem, but the shaming by her parent, brought the rape back to a personal problem. Then the intimate partner violence led to a similar response that somehow the victim caused the assault by her actions. Feminists have â€Å"raised awareness of the group nature of these objective conditions....As subjective concerns grew—more women coming to the same conclusions†¦..a social problem was born.† Sexual harassment is not necessarily experienced by actions but also take on a verbal assault. As an example, would be the name calling, by the men, in the film towards their women co-workers. The names were not funny, nor were the exceedingly ugly actions tied into the name calling. The EEOC has defined the problems involving sexual harassment to include a broad audience, but the thoughts are that the behavior is left then for interpretation (Henslin.Chapter9,pg.293). Ordinarily, there would be a set of rules for what constitutes sexual harassment, but that is not the case in various work settings. What can be c onsidered okay in work environment would be sexual harassment in another (Henslin.Chapter9,pg.293/294). I believe that architecture, plays a main role in everyone’s life. â€Å"Architecture- The art or practice of designing and constructing buildings. â€Å". So basically, without architecture, wouldn’t any schools (yeah any students reading this probably do NOT want architecture to exist. ), we wouldn’t have any libraries, or any buildings in general. You can live four days without water, three days without food, but only three hours without shelter. So, you cannot LIVE without architecture, it is the act of creating buildings, buildings are shelter, without shelter you would die in three hours. So you can thank all the people in the field of architecture, that you are reading this now. Ancient Greek architecture is best known for its temples, if you were to visit you would find them all over the place. The ruins of many Greek temples are surprisingly still intact. The second most well known are the open air theaters, they have located them to date back to about 350 BC. Ancient Rome had much similar architecture, then again many Roman cultural things grew out of Greece. Like Greek Gods, myths, and again, their architecture. But much after Rome, was Europe, Europe wasn’t a lot alike Greece, but they shared some similarities. For instance, the open air theaters I mentioned that were located in Greece(as well as most of the Hellenic region), Europe, during the Shakespearean age, had many of them built. Although they were greatly refined and quickly grew into closed theaters, they were still there. Where Greek architecture is focused on using stone and clay building material, the Japanese used mostly wood whilst building. At first the Japanese were very primitive in their building, making mostly pit houses. But after the introduction of Buddhism, the Japanese started to create temples, but they had no material to build such things, so darted using wood. These temples started as one floor of the tall elaborate Japanese temples we know as of today. But as their skills increased, so did the size of the temples, they eventually grew to be about eight floors tall. Japanese architecture has been described as, â€Å"Impossible†. That is, due to its wooden frame being fairly weak, though it can hold up to five families, even at its tallest height. When Greece was using clay, and Japan was using wood, India was sitting there using sticks and stones(which mind you, did in fact, break their bones). India was one of he most primitive building societies. But, they eventually grew to become the greatest architects of the modern world, ex. The Tag Mall. Indian architecture is old, yet has incorporated many modern values. The style they used to build the Tag Mall soon spread worldwide and became very popular at the time. The earliest buildings from India found dated back to about 2500 B. C. After several centuries of their stone type building,Linda finally discovered bronze. This discovery rocked the country, the style of building changed completely. Not only did it change that, it also changed their military strength. By far one of the most famous and well recognized architects is, Frank Lloyd Wright. Many collectors would crave to live in a house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (Architecture,l). He has designed several structures in Toledo alone. With his better known, â€Å"Falling Water†, he used â€Å"Organic Architecture†, ex. He built it right on top of a waterfall. Several architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright used Organic Architecture. Through all of his years of architecture, it is said that he always hated museums, except for the Solomon R. Cunningham Museum (Thiele, 147). Personally I admire Frank Lloyd Wright, Eve always looked up to him as one of the greatest architects ever. But alas there are more who would pass him. When you think of â€Å"from the inside out†, what comes to mind, probably not the Philharmonic Theatre. But Sharron does, that’s probably because he planned the Philharmonic from the inside out, it is a world renowned structure. Keno Tangent, is a world renowned Japanese architect (Architecture, 1). Out of all famous architects, one of the most important is Doll Loss. He ranks as one of the most important pioneers of the modern movement in architecture (Architecture, 1). Fumier Make is responsible for of the great Japanese urban designs we see today. He is recognized for his urban designs, which you can find in most places in Japan (Architecture, 1). Habitat 67 is a housing complex located in Montreal, Canada. It was designed by famous architect, Mosher Safe. When Mosher put in the idea for Habitat 67 he was ridiculed for thinking up such absurd designs. Eventually he was able to come up with a model, after that the board of architecture decided he could do it. Mosher struggle to find a team willing to build such an absurd structure but eventually he succeeded. The team built Habitat 67 at an impossible rate, it was finished within five years after Mosher submitted the project. Habitat 67 is often referred to as â€Å"Impossible†, or â€Å"Logos all over again†. I think It was amazing how hard Mosher worked to make this impossible project become a reality. Atomic, also referred to as â€Å"The Atom building†, is a completely metal structure located in Brussels, atomic resembles the shape of an atom. Atomic is only big enough to hold about 100 people at once. When you walk into one of the branches of the atom like shape of Atomic, all you will see is darkness. Take a few steps and the motion insensitive neon lights will turn on. You will walk and be lost in a world of optical illusions and â€Å"magic† lights. At the ball shape part of each branch, you will find a room, you can rent these rooms for a single night . Although I have never been to Atomic I dream that in the near future I would be able to have the chance to go. To wrap this up all I have to say is that I dream of someday becoming an architect. Architecture is a main part of our daily lives, without it we’d be dead. I don’t think anyone I know really appreciates the people who took years out of their lives to give us things Atomic and Habitat 67. People don’t spend their time to realize how much hard work it would have taken to build such elaborate things like ancient Japanese temples and Hellenic open air theaters. I dream of a world where people actually say â€Å"Thank you† to the people that designed their house, their school, all their buildings. You Just don’t see that happening these days. Troy being a former assessable player holds resentment towards the world and becomes bitter over the years. He has experienced injustice for many years and this has had a toll on him. Troy has the power to future to look at the situation differently but falls into the victim roll. Foreshadowing from the first scene of the play Troys has arrogance toward death leads to his death in the last scene with a baseball bat in his hand. The play is based around Troys love for baseball and how characters compare it to life situations. Death mint nothing but a fastball on the outside corner(l . . 82). Troy engine his life as a baseball game compares a fastball to death. During Troys life he encounters an experience that supposedly brings him close to death. This may not actually be the case due to Troys practice at telling stories, but its importance is from the idea of a perfect pitch. Troys sees this perfect pitch as a homerun, showing the reader that Troy likes to bring drama to any situation. Troy being a former baseball player reverts to old ways when he was playing, he never made it to the big leagues and holds resentment.By never growing from his baseball years, he approaches every situation as if he s in a game. Troy introduces his tale early in the play giving the reader a chance to understand his character. You got to take the crooked with the straights. Thats what Papa used to Lyons makes this remark to Corny, the son of Troy at the play in Act 2. This is significant because this is Lyons can finally understand and relate to Troy. Lyons has a metal plate in his head and has disabilities which cause him to make poor dictions and go to jail numerous times.Troy kept paying of the judge to get him out of jail and there was a part in the play where he remarks eying that he didnt care what happening to Lyons. Being his brother Troy and Lyons have tensions in their relationship and this when Lyons makes an important connection to Troy. By being able to see that they were both very similar in their life dictions which connect them. Though this is a sad moment in their relationship, Lyons sees that they have never accomplished their dreams. Interpret the quote meaning that even though there are good times and bad ones, one must take them both. Live you cannot experience happiness without struggle because then there wouldnt be any separation teens the two. In the beginning of the novel the Troys wife, Rose and best friend, Bono and trying to convince that times have changed sense he played baseball.Their son Corny is trying to get recruited for football and Troy soonest believe he will be able to make a living to support himself being a black football player. This causes friction and tension between the couple because of their mixed views. Troy cannot get over his personal problems and drags him to his relationship with Corny. Instead of being supportive of his child, but pretends to be concerned, only being selfish from his experiences. Troy hates the thought of his children doing better than he ever did, being suppressed by the time he is in poverty.Corny resents him because Troy was in jail and was not there for his childhood, as a result Corny does not feel as Hough his father should have a say in his life. You [Corny] swung and you [Corny] missed. Thats strike one. Dont you strike out! (2. 4. 58). Corny does not believe that he did anything wrong by quitting his job and as a result of a football career. Troy believes that Corny will also be cheated and segregated from the whites. Only because Troy is being stubborn and this is his perception of what will happen to Corny. Troy doesnt know how to describe his feelings and he uses a baseball reference to release his anger.The problem is that he still holds on this anger which is self seductive. Then Corny strikes out two times by protecting his mother. Troy refuses anything that is not his own opinion because of his own rejection from his opportunities turned down by baseball. If you going down You going down swinging ( 69). Troy tries to explain his life and diction making. This quotation shows how Troy is trying to justify his actions to Rose. He cannot get through to her using his baseball innuendos to make his actions seem less serious. Troy needs to look at Rose and apology for what he has done, but Troy sees his actions as laughable.He cannot take hat he has done serious because he has hit a home run. This is his way of making up for the past this is his own reason to keep her in his life because she is a distraction from his life. He replaces baseball with Alberta, in the sense he feels safe when he is with her and creates a relationship based on hitting a home run. Putting his runs on the board is how he looks at winning in life instead taking a step away from his delusional life with Alberta. They got a lot of colored baseball players now. Jackie Robinson was the first. Folks had to wait for Jackie Robinson (10).Troy blaming another person or his failure, he is not capable of taking responsibility for his own problems. Thinking till the day of his death Troy was robbed of a life he could have died he cannot get over the fact that he will never get that life back. Jackie Robinson is his scapegoat and wants to give the credit of being the first black baseball player, but his jealously takes him over. He talks about how Jackie wasnt even a good ball player instead of looking why the major leagues picked him to the first man. It was because of Jackasss strength and hitting record that one man when out on a whim and took him in.
